The area began as the home of many Native American tribes, and there is still some argument about which tribal word gave rise to the city?s name. Then there were the French churchmen and fur traders, and this was followed in 1818 by the French-Canadian explorer Solomon Juneau who not only settled here, but became the senior founding father of Milwaukee and its first mayor in 1846. Around that time, the first large influx of German-Americans changed the face of the city, and this was followed by successive waves of Polish-Americans and others from Eastern Europe.

And today the city has grown to become the 23rd most populated city in the country. It is a center of business too as 13 Fortune 1000 companies are located here. Some of them are Harley-Davidson, Northwestern Mutual, GE Healthcare Diagnostic Imaging, Rockwell Automation and Briggs & Stratton.
