Recommendations for Viola Lessons

Children are able to pick up music instruction at very early ages, so it is never too early to start learning viola. The viola is in the middle of the violin family and is therefore larger than a violin. Once a child is large enough to comfortably hold a viola, however, there?s no age limit on learning this powerful and entertaining instrument. It?s much easier to learn to read music once you can read the alphabet, but the learning can begin even before a student is able to read music. Learning viola can start at any age. On the other end of the spectrum, it?s never too late to learn to play an instrument. While some people think it?s harder to learn when you?re older, viola is easy to pick up at any age. Music teachers sometimes find older, more dedicated students actually learn quicker because they?re willing to practice more to learn to play music. To learn viola, you will need nothing more than a moderately priced viola — there?s no need to bring a masterpiece to a first lesson. You?ll probably be able to find one available for short-term or long-term rental at a music store if you aren?t sure you?ll be continuing with your lessons. Of course, you?ll want to carry the instrument in a sturdy case with room to hold its bow and some rosin. Extra stings are essential, too. You may want a music stand if your teacher doesn?t provide one. It is important to note that violas vary in size more than violins, so you may want to take extra care in choosing an instrument that is a comfortable size for you. Playing viola will be much more pleasant for students who carefully choose the size of their instruments before taking their first viola lesson. The right instrument matched with the right student is a beautiful thing. When the right teacher is matched with the right student, viola lessons can be a beautiful thing, too.
